Emergency Classifications

For a nuclear power plant emergency there are four different classification levels.

  • Notification of Unusual Event: There is a problem at the nuclear facility but no offsite emergency action is necessary.
  • Alert: There is a problem at the nuclear facility that has potential for a radiological release. Washington County will begin emergency operations center activation and alert schools and care facilities.
  • Site Area Emergency: A more serious problem has occurred at the plant and small amounts of radiation might have or could leak into the environment. Sirens will be sounded. Public should tune to KFAB 1110 AM for information.
  • General Emergency: A very serious problem has occurred at the plant and radiation could leak outside and off-site of the plant. Sirens will sound once again and KFAB will continue broadcasting the latest updates for public safety.
